Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Ellen Picton

Position:  I am a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher which was once known as Home Economics.  I teach Foods and Nutrition, Survival 101 (how to be an adult and manage yourself, job and money), and this year a new Hospitality and Tourism class.  I also coach volleyball and help with Hi Cap and concessions.

Education:  I come from a family of teachers, grew up in Spokane and went through the Mead school system.  My only college choice was my mother’s alma mater Washington State University where I received a BS in Home Economics Education and was fortunate enough to also play volleyball for the Cougs. While I have graduate credits all over the state, my Masters in Education is from Whitworth.

Experience:  I began my teaching career at Columbia HS in Hunters, WA where I was a full time Home and Family Life teacher and coach of everything the girls did from ’79-’83.  From there I went to Riverside High School in Chattaroy, WA where I taught from ’83-’96.  I coached volleyball, softball, cheer and drill team for the Rams.  I took time off before my sons Willy and Tristan were enrolled in school here in Manson.  I began substituting in ’02 and have had a variety of long-term assignments in both the high school and the middle school with even a K-2 job when Options first started.  Because my major covers so many topics I even created a 6th grade science elective dealing with brain development and how we learn that lead to Red Cross babysitting certifications.

Outside Interests: I enjoy keeping food traditions alive and well like making jam and holiday meals with family and friends.  I love to share in expressions of creativity like drama and music especially if it involves my kids.  I still love volleyball but now it’s from the bench rather than playing.
